Recorded this a couple of months ago, then let it just sit there due to various things happening around me. Guess, can’t find a more befitting time to post this, with one of the master balladiers of Hindi folk music breathing his last. A genre that I truly connect with, well, atleast more often than not— the bluesy, sad numbers…….

Dimple’s brilliant portrayal in this movie bagged her a national award.

I was particularly intrigued by this movie where she’s considered a ‘female weeper/mourner’.

As you wander past those aromatic, green Neem trees, the gorgeous, magical mist is right there, in front of you, beckoning you! It’s surreal yet compelling, so surreal, it makes you forget yourself. There’s just something about it that makes you want to touch it, and experience it in all its glory. This surreal reality touches you akin to how the gentle vibrations of musical notes would. Those notes, that you have been looking for all your life, or, have you? Don’t those gentle vibrations stir you deep down somewhere, tug at your very existence, in ways that you can never, ever express?

And, as you pass a clearing, you finally see something that lures you. You know it’s there, yet you can’t see it! Are those musical swaras? You don’t know, but whatever it is, you can sense it strongly. The excitement, and ambivalence of having just sensed it leaves you wanting for more, and your curiosity gently pushes you further.

As your legs fail to stop, the vibrations drifting alongside the gentle, calm breeze touches you in innumerable, yet unexplainable ways. You feel the vibrations, their frequencies, their harmonics……. So, which of those vibrations touches you the most, or is it a permutation combination of all of them, resulting in a complex progression? You have no clue, and as you go deeper and deeper, uncertainty invites you, to keep treading that path, to look for that part of you that has made you walk this far!

The mist finally dissipates, and you see those footprints clearly for the first time. You stop dead in your tracks, you look around….Is there someone to whom those footprints could belong? You try calling out, but all you hear is a reflection of yourself, your own voice! You look up, and one of deep realization hits you beyond imagination. The footprints belong to the great, legendary Saint Tyagaraja, whose eternal love for music is inside you, this very moment, right here, in this surreal yet irresistible place….

Friend, you just discovered the footprints of the one and only Tyagaraja! Hail Tyagaraja!

I have great pleasure in introducing a really talented, budding composer, Sachin Balu from Kannur, Kerala. He is all of 19 years old, and hails from a family of musicians and this is first ever original composition. His brother Roshan Balu is just about making a mark in Bollywood!

Most of 2011 has been brutal on me, mainly so with music and health taking a major beating. The little music that I have been fortunate enough to have been in touch with ranges from a couple of random covers to a few originals, now in different stages of completion.

Vijay Krishna’s Kahe Ruthe is one of my favorite originals on Muziboo. Ka se kahoon is a pathos folk ballad in Hindi. Hopefully the pain and longing that I have tried to focus on, comes through, apart from the diction, of course.

Took a lot of liberties in this and improvised it as I thought fit :) The original song is from the movie Gemini, and this title number was a runaway hit when it released. Pichai Podu- Spoof for "Pichakkara Idol" | Musicians Available

Adapted for “Pichchakkaara Idol”, a spoof reality show mocking the splurge of reality shows. This was staged by members of the Kansas City Tamil Sangam recently. This number was part of a skit, a spoof, for one of the characters begging for alms. The lyrics reflect someone begging for food, in a lighter vein!

My dad completed 74 years on 26th of April. My love for music is definitely partly from him. He is very loyal to C.Ramachandra, the VR combo, G.Ramanathan, Ilayaraaja amongst a notable few. But somehow along the way, think he froze in time…… ARR is not someone he really acknowledges, so this is yet another attempt of mine to make him see that ARR can rock too :)

Monster of a song by Chitra, and just an absolutely beautiful melody by ARR. Somehow I always envisioned this as an emotional roller coaster, thanks to each line showing a conflicting emotion. Hope you all enjoy this.

This is the first post on my space for the year 2011, and my 6th year of audioblogging with 3 of that being on Muziboo. This is a wonderful music community which has helped me grow, improve, and in turn introduced some talented and enthusiastic musicians to interact with. Like to take this opportunity to thank all of you who have been regular visitors to this space. Your support & encouragement has meant a lot in the last couple of years…

I have known Kaushik for almost a year now, and he is easily one of the most soulful pianists I have ever come across. I am so glad to have collaborated with him especially for this number. He tailored the arrangement to my vocals instead of the other way around….quite an interesting experience for me. Thanks Kaushik for all your hard work— given that I had improvised quite a lot, I am sure it wasn’t easy :)

This cover also marks my first attempt at mixing everything from scratch. I had to learn about frequency of instruments, spatial placement of instruments, clashing of vocals with the other tracks et al. Thanks Bala and Jay for those numerous crash courses on mixing-couldn’t have gone this far without you both!

Was a challenging cover for me in every conceivable department, but the major head breaker personally was the language/diction. Know fully well it’s not perfect as it should be, but still something that I am proud that I gave a shot at that I wanted to share it, nonetheless. Apologize for some recording glitches, and those diction errors, which I am sure are lurking in almost every line. And as with every other cover of mine, you will find quite a few improvs here and there

My 2nd cover of a classical based number from Morning Raaga after Maathey This is one of the most popular invocations on Swami Ganesha set in the raagam Naattai, a very pleasing and chirpy raagam, almost considered a standard in many if not all classical concerts.

The one by Bombay Jayashree in the movie is a little short… so I rearranged the track a little, and added my own stuff to it. And, for the first time- have done harmonies in a totally classical composition and introduced a mild western influence here and there.

So, Classical purists—please excuse :)

Pallavi:
Dikshithar starts off with a very small pallavi singing “I medidate and recite(‘Smaraami’) with my whole heart(‘Manasa’) on the supreme Lord Ganapathy, he who is worshipped by(‘Vandhitha’) sage Vashista, Vaamadeva and others(‘aadhi’)”. Very simple but extremely open-ended for improvisation and I have heard so many different versions of the pallavi alone which once again is because of the flexibility characteristic of all dikshithar krithis. The entire scale and important phrases of the raga are brilliantly captured in the opening lines itself. Moving on to the samaashti charanam now

Anupallavi/Charanam:
Dikshithar continues describing Lord Ganesha as “He is the son(‘sutham’) of Lord Mahadeva, adored(‘nutham’) by Guruguha. He shines(‘Prakaasham’) like crores(‘koti’) of cupids(‘maara’) put together. He is the peaceful one(‘Shaantham’) and loves(‘priyam’) literary epics(‘Mahakaavya’) and other arts like Drama(‘Naataka’). He uses a mouse(‘mooshika’) as his vehicle(‘vaahana’) and loves modhakam(a popular sweet).” Not much to explain in the charanam except for the beautiful inclusion of the raga mudhra ingeniously incorporated in the word ‘Naataka’ referring to drama. On the whole, a simple composition.(With all due respect to Lord Ganesha), maybe Dikshithar composed this while he was asleep or something :). The characteristic ‘Sa Ri3’ phrase embellishes this composition.

Thendral Vandhu Theendum (cover version)-Avadhaaram

Been my long time dream to cover this song, probably ranks highest in my list of totally digged songs for many years now. This is basically a folkish kinda song, and intentionally have done it with a weirdly open throated tone (a sore one at that as well) in the hope of imparting that rustic, crude, and probably a little imperfect charm of the typical down south folk style. For those of you who don’t know Tamizh, the song is about a guy who describes how life around her is, to a blind girl. He tries to show her in words as to how colors, flowers and love look and feel, for instance. The picturization is also interesting for those of you who are visual buffs :) This is also yet another attempt of mine in changing lyrics to make this a female solo as well.

This goes out to my parents who are celebrating their 43rd wedding annivsersary today, and to my brother who celebrated his bday on Nov 14th… I owe my inculcation into music, fueling my interest to listen to all kinds of music amongst other things to the 3 of them! To top it all, all of them simply adore this song- guess that was good enough reason to attempt it. K-track is a bummer but some songs can’t be passed up =)

This is considered one of Chitra’s anthems and definitely one of the most challenging numbers she has done, EVER! Amazing, absolutely brilliant composition by Maragathamani (aka Keeravani/M M Kreem). Swarnalatha, a singer par excellence passed away a couple of days ago at the age of 37. Blessed with a very unique tone, abundant versatility and a rich voice, she will be sorely missed in the years to come….

This is my attempt at one song of hers which was tough breathwise, lyrics/emoting wise owing to what the song means… It bagged her the National Award for the Best Female Playback Singer. I have tried to make a k-track myself since the ones I found were quite pathetic. Hopefully it doesn’t sound too bad!

Probably the hardest song I have done to date emoting wise…given that literally each word had a different conflicting emotion attached to it OR that’s what I took away from the original when I heard it the first time. Unnikrishan KB has lent the male vocals for this, and as always, been really emotive-his signature :)

The k-track didn’t have the initial backing chords as in the original. So in came Bala Thanks a ton for doing that, you gave it the apt start it needed :)

This number is from Nayagan, probably one of the best movies of Kamal, and of Manirathnam’s probably.

To give a little background to those who aren’t familiar with the song, the song takes place in a brothel in Bombay/Dharavi area, and IR roped in 2 very popular singers of yesteryear’sTamizh film music- Jamuna Rani & M.S.Rajeswari ( the child like voice ). This song became popular back then, since it used old time instruments (andha kaalatthu baani types:-) which is very evident from the tones/style of the BGM’s.

My first time collaborating with Adithi Devarajan, and was such fun, and an absolute pleasure working with her! Here’s looking forward to more duets in the future.

And this song goes out to Raj, who requested that we try this out. And, here's wishing all listeners a very happy Sankaranthi/Pongal ( a little belated though :)

I think every Ilayaraaja fan out there would definitely know and love this song. Inspite of a pathetic picturisation , and definitely not to mention pathetic people being starred in the original, this song is an anthem of sorts. The malayalam version of this is a show stopper as well.

The Tamizh version differs quite a bit from the Malayalam one, being a duet and romantic theme being a couple. I worked in re-arranging the track a little bit so it would fit the tamizh bill, so to speak :)

Sriram Srinivasan has lent the male vocals for this one, and I personally wanted a non-IL clone to sing this, and thought Sriram would bring a different flavour to this one. Thanks Sriram— my first collaboration with you and it was really fun :-)

are probably some of the most famous lines of Bharathiyaar. This very short version is based on the virutham piece done by Bombay Jayashree in her album “Atma- the soul”

This song has been in my mind for god knows— how many years!? Thanks to never finding a track, was always on a wish list and remained there. This cover has been in the making for a while now. And, it so happened that I did this song before I went into my self proclaimed singing block crap :( Although I have done some sporadic recordings here and there, I haven’t been able to record anything to my satisfaction for the last month or so! Somehow, it is just not happening, and am really happy Murali Ramanathan could get this done, so I can keep my space active :)) Thank you Murali for singing this along with me.

Probably one of the tougher numbers I have done until now. I wanted to do it in one shot, and have managed to for the most part, except for some punch ins which I couldn’t avoid *darn*!!

Been an avid lover of this song right from the time I listened to it, atleast some 20 odd years ago I am sure. Beautiful pick from IL’s collection. I would probably equate this song to the “Chaliya” or some other equivalent Hindi number of today with respect to the mood/emotions it evoked then! Absolutely delectable singing by S Janaki, one of her best I would say. Ofcourse not to mention the beautifully done harmonies!!!

Am so glad to be covering this song as a celebration to finishing my 2nd 1/2 marathon last Sunday. I managed to shave 30 mins off my previous years timing. Those of you who like to read, are welcome to stop by my text blog here And, thanks in advance to those who do decide to do that :)

Celebrating Shankarabaranam-2- Maanasa Sancharare with Murali Venkatraman

“Have you read all these books ?!”

My mother exclaimed innocently looking at the many cartons of books I have ranging from highly technical ones which ran for thousand pages or more to ones which were pocket-sized that captured popular science in an interesting way. I was stunned for a moment since I did not know how to answer. I took a look at my big collection and responded:

“No amma. I hope I will read them some day”

She got busy with kitchen work and had forgotten the conversation. For her it was just a curiosity as to how much her son could study.

But the question reverberated in my mind. Why do I have so many books some of which I may never be reading ? For example, I have books on mathematical logic,topology etc but given my time constraints, I wonder if I will ever get to read them. It led me to an important decision – “No more books until absolutely necessary”. My mother’s simple innocence-laden question pushed me to rethink about my attitude towards buying books.

While talking about the life of the poet-philosopher-composer Sadashiva Brahmendra one cannot but admire how a simple instruction from his mother-in-law transformed his life from one of a possible ordinary family man into someone who moved freely like a gypsy and composed beautiful songs with deep philosophical thought. It may be a folklore, that his mother-in-law’s words “Don’t come inside the house” on the night of his marriage consummation, made him rethink about his real pursuits in life.

However, consider another related question : “What is the purpose of life if there is one at all ?”. This seemingly simple question has been addressed for centuries and people are still trying to find an answer. With brahmendra, the simple instruction/question did have a deep impact on the man who finally came to the public domain and we were blessed with an exceptional poet. Thus seemingly simple innocent questions/instructions may bring about some dramatic irreversible transformations.

To quote my mentor Dr. Bosco Emmanuel:

“Pioneers of science always asked and addressed simple questions. How did D. J. Thouless arrive at the branching in the theory of percolation ? He just asked a simple question. What will be the conductivity of carbon if I randomly punched a few holes in it ? He took a carbon sheet and punched a few random holes in it, measured the conductivity and plotted a graph of the conductivity versus available area. He finally ended up being an exponent in percolation theory "

In this beautiful song which is set in the ragam shyama, which is a cousin of shuddha saaveri and aarabhi, Sadashiva expounds beautiful descriptions of a divine being (krishna) when he himself is in a state of trance. He instructs the mind to roam in the field of universal consciousness (the Brahman) aided sweetly by the music.

In the movie, this comes as a lullaby that the sishya sings for the guru. The director K. Vishwanath had tastefully used a break in the song in the guise of sishya forgetting the lyrics. This invariably invites the voice of guru (SPB) and an uninfringing melody which gently rocks the listener is born. In our version, I have expanded the song a little more to allow more room for the male singer to savor.

Originals are great, has no boundaries, have the ability to make it your own, and needless to say most artists are way more passionate in this since you are part of the creative team :)

Bala approached me with this song a while ago and when I listened to it, found it pretty interesting. Thanks Bala, really appreciate you trusting my abilities and letting me explore the melody/feel however I wanted to :-)

A very beautiful romantic number from a rather lousy movie Ah Aah!! ARR has his real talent to rope in those perfect voices for his numbers and this is no exception. Naresh iyer identified with the 16+ dreamy eyed girls when he debuted in the Tamil music industry. Have never cared too much for Madhushree's voice. Like Sadhana Sargam's tone, infinitely better :)

Those of you who haven't watched this song, Please, I sincerely urge you to catch it on youtube so you can laugh your guts out :D Pity you-- ARR, one of your most beautiful melodies pictured this way.

Been more a year since I have had this song on my list, fervently searching for that voice which would re-create the magic that Naresh Iyer weaved when it released. And, I was fortunate enough to find Karthik Nagarajan, thanks to Sindhuja :-)

To me, this song is probably one of the best romantic melodies ever done by ARR, ofcourse not to mention Surya being featured :P

A long story……………………………………………………………

To cut it short—
1. Asked Sushane if he will play violin for an unplugged version of my vande maataram. Ans: yes
2. Was down with sore throat, so was late in sending it to him. Sent in 2 days before with an even worse sore throat than I started out !
3. He got back to me saying it would be great if we can do orchestration for it and he can do it. Ans: yes ( me )
4. Aug 14th, 11.30 AM: Sent me a version but that just had the pallavi (technical/computer hanging issues et al), not the charanam. I was a little shocked, bemused.everthing rolled into one. Then he had this brilliant idea to make the charanam into a virutham.
5. Aug 14th 11.30 PM: I went along with that idea and this is what we came up with

Also, he has added some lyrics of his own to this wonderful piece.

Song that introduced and shot Harini, the golden voice to fame. Amazing movie featuring Anu hassan and directed by Suhasini Maniratnam, dealing with caste/communal issues and women’s rise to freedom in a small interior village in TamilNadu. What better way to celebrate our independence with a song from a movie which rightly fights injustice across various levels?

The movie and the audio album had 2 versions, the second being “piruchified” by none other than Hariharan. Awesome awesome one if you want to get goosebumps. The version I have presented has more influence of the male than the female ( ofcourse not the insane brigas of Hariharans LOL)

Absolutely fell in love with this song when I heard it in 2008, the year it released. Always have wondered why this album of ARR wasn’t as popular as his other Hindi ones. Then… I made the mistake of seeing the movie :-( Very sad state of affairs to say the least, and definitely the lesser the said, the better!

Music by ARR, just beautiful!!! And this is the 2nd song I am covering after Tu hi mera dosth with George Kuruvilla.

This song is a beautiful romantic number with great singing by Alka Yagnik & Javed Ali. Not a big fan of hers, but I have found her giving her best for ARR consistently, and this song is no exception.

I had a pre-requisite to do this number, and that was Pradip being available. Given the complexity of the ending swarams/jathis, and the voice match— somehow couldn’t imagine anyone else giving this song the required dedication, that it so richly deserves. So, thank you Pradip, for doing Javed’s parts, and for all your help especially in my nemesis lang., Hindi LOL

It may not be wrong to call the movie shankarabharaNam as the crowning jewel among the works of composer Shri K. V. Mahadevan. It was a movie that simply established that in the midst of light music, one could really be left captivated by classical music if presented appropriately with a good story-line (by director K Vishwanath) . Although KVM had worked magic all through his telugu and tamil movies (e.g SwatikiraNam, thiruviLaiyaadal ), he made a remarkable choice of a singer in this movie. In all his earlier movies, he went for singers who were either partially trained (Susheela) or at the level of vidwan (Ghantasala, T. M. Soundararajan). In this movie, he picked S. P . Balasubramaniyam (who calls him that ? It is either SPB, SP or Balu) who was completely untrained and established that a committed effort to train him would provide rich dividends. SPB just grew from strength to strength and was associate with so many other films where he breezed through many classical and semi-classical compositions and both telugu and tamil music were never the same.

Science and Art cross barriers. An obscure researcher working quietly in a remote place like port of Madras, was recognized by the great mathematician Hardy only to unveil the genius that was Ramanujan. Ramanujan knew nothing but math. But Hardy ensured that his work was recognized beyond doubt. Similarly for our country that has had many regional problems because of languages, music has often provided the much needed fabric of harmony. How would one explain KVM and SPB’s success then ? SPB – a native telugu speaker – is loved by tamils all over and KVM – a tamilian- whose reputation as a composer in Telugu is unmistakable. Other greats likeMSV, IR, Susheela, Janaki, Chitra, and Yesudas and now Rehman have similar reputations. The beauty of Telugu seems to be locked in the fact that it is heavily derived from sanskrit but slanted in a delivery which is southern. In a way it ideally represents a good blend of the North and South Indian elements in sync. Malayalam is another language which has a similar blend although it is softer on most syllables than Telugu.

In an effort to recall and celebrate 30 years since the release of the movie, I team up with my friends ( Meera, Narayanan, Vidya, Adithi and may be some more) to re-do some of the songs in the movie as a tribute. Some songs will be rendered as they were in the movie and some with slight modifications in arrangements. Some of us are not native telugu speakers but have sincerely tried for dictional accuracy by consulting with telugu speaking friends. Despite our best efforts, if there be errors we sincerely apologize.

The first song in this series is “E teeruga nanu” – a classical composition of Bhadrachala Ramadas who may be called the tamil equivalent of Manikkavaasagar. Both were state-servants who out of their devotion towards their deities,, used up the state money for charity and religious causes. Both were great poets and singers and have left a wealth of literature for us to indulge. This song appeared in a truncated form in the movie. Hence when I created the Karaoke track, I took the liberty of expanding the song to include the last paragraph of the original. In the movie, the song was delivered by the inimitable Vani Jeyaram. In here, we present this as a duet with some extra (hopefully) un-infringing phrases. I find that the raga of the song is either Nadanamakriya or Mayamalawagowla. I am not very sure about the differences between these two. The lyrics of the song were obtained from this link and they are provided here for your reference:

A movie which just had those really really melodious songs. Movie was okay, the usual love theme with nothing new to offer, but the songs were just mindblowing, and in the 80’s this was like “the thing” LOL

Been a long desire of mine to sing this song. Chitra is just awesome in this song, mindblowing!! Had a couple of tracks but none that really was “the track” if you know what I mean :) So, postponed it saying “The day shall come when I shall get an original -1”, and I waited quite a while.

Then managed to download a decent enough track. Some last minute changes, asked Murali if he could do Srinivas’s parts since I had no patience to ctrl-c ctrl-v those chorus parts from the original :) The track has some distortions here and there, so please do bear with that

So, here it is, pretty tough song on the breath and the tongue twisting fast occuring words. Hope you all like the effort :D

I really liked the vocals in the original and decided to try it. Probably my first foray into the rock genre, well let’s say Tam-Rock :-)

There's this friend of mine whom I met quite a while ago, was an acquaintance then and probably is one of my best friends until date. This year completes 10 years of friendship and he especially loves this song, well atleast did when it came out :D

Suggested by Tailgunner aka Anup a long long time ago, and by that I really mean a lloooong time ago— say about 2 yrs ago :))

Somehow, never got around to doing this. I still remember listening to the original he sent along with the k-track and falling instantly in love with it. Thanks Anup for both of those…

One of the songs that had me totally hooked, in the current crop of hits, not that I listen to latest "any" music too much :-))

Song goes out to Manohar, my husband. This is for you Manu, for all your dedication and hard work towards the Big Sur marathon that happened in April 09. Congratulations!!! You have survived the beast aka the wind, and undoubtedly a brutally difficult course :-)

Some things you might want to know (aah, here it comes!)
1. Still striving to get my Hindi pronunciation right, hopefully would like to think I have got kHwaab & AnkHon ( at the very least) right this time LOL All your diction corrections and suggestions keep me going. So, thanks in advance!
2. Some improvs from the original. Have tried some classical stuff as well as a few straight western notes to keep the flavour of the song intact.
3. Changed my voice a little here and there to suit the mood. Hopefully the mood is conveyed :)
4. Played with the rhythm here and there :P

This song goes out to you Rosh, and thanks for requesting this!!

The movie Ore Kadal ( a totally off beat film with brilliant performances by both Meera Jasmine and Mamootty, the former earning a Shantaram’s National Award & Kerala State Award) has music scored by Ouseppachan (earning a Kerala State award as well). Interesting tidbit about this album is that, all songs are in the raagam Subha Pantuvaraali, probably one of the most frequently used, to depict pathos/sadness/despair.

I know there are a lot of non-Malayalam speakers in the blog world, who still take the interest and time to listen, so here is a short description of what the song is about to help make your listening experience better.“Yamuna Veruthey” is about a woman who longs for her lover who has deserted her. She equates herself to Yamuna and her lover to Krishna also known as Nandalala (one of the many names Krishna is referred to by). So, there goes the general picture :) Add a lot of sadness and despair to the feel of the song and this is bound to be a haunter. Don’t forget to listen to the original by Shweta Mohan, D/O singer Sujatha.

Thought my son Ayush's serene face (while sleeping) might suit the theme of the song, but he's far from anything serene.. so just a hope, let's say :)

So, finally, getting to do a request from quite a few audiobloggers and a couple of my friends.

Song by HJ, only difference is minimal orchestration, with Sudha Raghunathan as the lead vocalist, and not Bombay Jayashree. Nothing special about the song per se, simple song and nice lyrics for a change. Have always liked this song from the beginning, but had pretty strong requests not to do it, from a few men folk I know. Rajesh Raman is based out of UK, and is blessed with a very strong yet expression laden voice, and a range to match. Some of his best works are featured in his website, so please do visit his page when you get the time. He has done an amazing job on this song which has been sung originally by Shankar Mahadevan.

Yuvvraaj--ARR at his all time best!

Probably one of the best albums of ARR's I would say. Except for 1 or 2, the album has amazingly mind blowing orchestration and more so, beautiful execution by artists who have performed. Unfortunately, based on the audio I recently made the mistake of seeing this movie- unsure if I can even call it that!! (ARR, hope you are still sane enough to churn out more music even after this visual disaster so to say)

Anyways, now that being said, this song is probably the most dreaded post of mine in a long long time, and only one reason -- it's Hindi :)Well, to give a little history, I did try posting a Hindi number a while ago ( hmm, let's see, about say 2.5 years ago), and after that, I decided not to torture people more than necessary. So, graciously stuck to languages I knew, which aren't many just incase you are wondering :-D

And, now I am back again :)

Recently, had a chance to become a member of Muziboo and pity, didn't know until I researched that it was an online music community! I saw posts by fellow muzibians ( hope I said it right), and here I am having mustered up the courage to venture into this language yet again, hoping to do more numbers in the future. Diction/pronounication might suck, but then I guess will improve as I go along. Thanks for your patience in advance :D

George Kuruvilla is a long time muzibian, and a quite popular one I should say . He has got an originality which shows up in every cover version he does, and that, in my opinion is very difficult, given that you are always guided by the original! Has a very nice distinctive voice which flows effortlessly through any song. I know you weren't that crazy about the song in the first place, George. So I really appreciate you doing it inspite of that!! The final part of the song (from aawaaz ka dariyaa) has pretty messed up chords. So I have sung that part of the song with my ears literally shut. I would appreciate if listeners could shut their mind off to the background score in that part *LOL*

Here's wishing all the readers of this blog, and audiobloggers around the globe, a very wonderful and prosperous New Year! 2008 has been a mixed bag in many respects, just as any other year I guess. Musically, quite a satisfying year I should admit, with a lot of avenues opening up for me personally.

The song featured today is from the movie Dhaam Dhoom starring Jeyam Ravi and 2 heroines not worth mentioning!! Richard Gere, should, on all accounts hang himself if he gets to see this rather poorly made remake of his movie "The Red Corner". Movie was barely passable with some insane location shoots in the then USSR, but for the saving grace of HJ's music. Some of the songs in the OST are okay, and 2 main reasons I have done this song are:

1. Got a nice karoake soundtrack and
2. Song didn't require too much concentration *LOL*.

Typically, recordings seem to happen on my day off and I have realized that it takes way, way more motivation to sit and record an equivalent of paadariyaen padiappariyaen types. This number by Bombay Jayashree follows HJ's typical equation:

A bassy voice + some harmonies interspersed here and there= HJ's soft hits

This track opens with a harmony by Krish, a voice that I have always liked, given his ease of rendition and voice clarity. Interestingly, I wish I had sung his part and not the main female lead :)

This was my first post almost 3 years ago, but sans K-track though. Found this somewhere quite a while ago, and I just, just couldn't resist the awesome K-track , so here it is.. encore

Probably one of the slow ballads of Yuvan Shankar Raja's that has managed to stay on my mind for quite a while now. Pity it didn't get featured in the movie. Female version is by Shreya and I think she has done an amazing job on it. Somehow, the male version by KK somehow didn't impress me that much, which is very surprising since I think KK rocks in similar songs.

This K-track starts with one of the most beautiful instrumental pieces which was featured in the movie. Following that comes the actual song..

Sunday last, managed to finish a half marathon . Clocked 2H and 58 mins!! It was awesome and probably one of the most life changing experiences I have had until now.

Swarasthaanam completed 2 years this February. And, I vanished off the face of the blogging world for 9 long months!!

Well, as many of you might already know, my son Ayush came along in June of last year. He's almost 9 months, a happy-go-lucky child with a long tail that needs to be constantly tucked in!! As for life, it's filled with a pair of tiny feet which makes every passing minute memorable & absolutely adorable which I never thought possible...

Last year was pretty good, *eventful* is the right word I guess. Got to meet Anup Menon in June although wish he had stayed for a longer time!! New years was good, spent a little differently-- hitting the pillow before midnight for a change. And finally met up with Murali Venkatraman aka MS of dhool forum -- after nearly a year and a half of being in touch via phone and IM's. We thought of recording something in those 5 days that he stayed with us, but then, Ayush was too intent on pulling his glasses every conceivable chance the kid got-- so one might say it didn't exactly work out as expected ;-)

A movie which broke records for the way it had been picturised nad ofcourse needless to say-- raking up enough controversy due to the subject.

This song Narumugaiyae from the movie Iruvar has been originally sung by Unnikrishnan & Bombay Jayashree tuned by ARR. A beautiful haunting tune picturised even more beautifully by Manirathnam in the movie ( with that geva colour that old Tamizh movies used to come in!!)

Hemanth Sharma, a gifted singer (Sonu Nigam sound alike :) has rendered the male voice in this version. This has been in the making for almost a month now and finally seeing light today.

A gem rejuvenated after nearly 21 years!!

Its been a little more than a year since I started audioblogging. Many hits and misses but nonetheless thoroughly enjoyable ones to say the least. Thanks to each one of you for extending your overwhelming support in keeping this audioblog running.

This movie had more than an average storyline, simple screenplay, a complex, controversial core theme (Hindu/Christian love triangle) and shooting off the charts songs. Ilayaraaja was considered first among equals then although in reality he was riding the crest wave of success alone--way above his peers. Each and every song in this movie is a gem, situational at best and bringing out the rustic folk theme of down south Tamil Nadu.

This specific song "Kodyilae" is a beauty in itself, the major part of it being infused by none other than P.Jayachandran and Janaki ( a few of IL's staple singers then). A simple yet constantly hummable melody that captures one's heart beyond words.

Tuet --Jo, Vidyu and Myself

Yet another malayalam number but a tuet (3 of us) this time.

It was real weird when Jo sent me this song and said "you know what? I don't have an MP3 of this and neither can I find one on the net. So, here's a file which I sang so you can listen to it and learn" Ofcourse I reacted more to the information on this song than the actual song itself!! I had definitely heard of it, but didn't know where and when!?!

I listened to it and was pleasantly thrilled to find that the same song exists in Tamizh (Poongaaviyam- from Karpoora mullai; KJY, P.Susheela and Chitra). I quickly pinged Jo to let him know that I know the song even before I heard the 2nd word in entirety. So end result was I never heard the malayalam version since I knew the Tamizh one.

In the Tamizh version, this is picturised on Amla and Srividya. They are getting together when the latter comes to know that Amla is indeed her daughter. As expected emotional river drowns both of them and the rendition reflects it. So I visualised that scene when I sang what seemed to be Amla's parts since I followed after Vidyu started and Srividya starts in the movie (-:

I still remember this line "mounam polum paadum, kaalam ennum thengum" where Amla is shown sobbing while singing. So, you might find that line a little hesitant, weak and it is intentional.

Now, I am sure folks are wondering this long long drawn out rant about the song. This is infact the anticipatory bail I am taking for that single line in the song *LOL*

Jo & Vidyu are huge success stories in their own right, so guess I shall invite you to listen now...

Battle of the Na/Nha's

Am back with a post-a malayalam one after a long hiatus. Pradip suggested this song way long back and here it is-- the final product.

Honestly had a real tough time pronouncing the Na and Nha sounds in Malayalam. Since I am predominantly a Tamizhachi, I have never had to fight constantly between Na and Nha in most of my native tongue songs as against in Malayalam where these 2 are present in every 2nd word literally !!! Had almost given up when Pradip really took pity on me and decided enough is enough and said "Ok-- I guess you are fed up with me, so I decided not to bug you anymore".

I don't know whether Pradip is left handed, but we have a saying in TamilNadu as "Left-la aduchaar da!" [Just an indication that one can do what ever they do best with their 'left hand' inspite of being right handed predominantly] That's about the only phrase I can think of right now after I heard the final mixed version. It is truly a pleasure to sing alongside an awesome talent like him!!

Vizhiyil Vizhundhu

Been donkeys years since I posted anything. Well, however the donkey now decided to bray and here's the result *LOL*

I still distinctly remember this movie, being the controversial dig it was at intercaste marraiges. Created an uproar then. Actually coming to think about it, not a bad concept given the conservativeness TamilNadu was immersed in then. Probably still is....*ahem ahem*

Ilayaraja at this absolute best here- such evergreen ones! Ofcourse, my favourite was not the much acclaimed "Aayiram thaamarai" but the rather pleasant, amazing seconds laden "Kaathal Oviyam". I touched cloud nine when the latter became my maiden stage song when Thillana launched way back in 2000.

This song featured today has an especially amazing quality to it.
Reasons: set in Suddha dhanyaasi which in itself is such a mesmerizer, the way the orchestration has been woven into the song, and to top it all the light jathi which accompanies the 1st interlude giving a wee bit more insight into what IL is - a strong propogator of melody and a stickler to structure.

There is a lot of confusion as to who rendered the female part, B.S.Sasirekha or Jency. I debated that and finally decided to take my ears into consideration alongside some reliable music portals information. So BSS it is....

Murali sent me this karaoke ages ago and has shown considerable restraint in not reminding me no more than once a week (-: Thanks for the karaoke Murali.

And.....as always criticisms are welcome. Well for accolades, I accept Mastercard and Visa *Grin*

When: My Undergrad days
Imp., note: Decided to do this song.

It just so happened that I was one among the 2 in our group who could *really sing* some of the sangathis in this song. This number was narrowed down as an entry to the group competition and we 2 were definitely not a group by any stretch of imagination. So me-- the royal pain that I am, took it up as a challenge to get the group to sound as one, to break all predictions, change the face of the department and uphold the name, blah blah blah!!

Every one of us got to see each other more than necessary in the 2 weeks that ensued. But, little did I realise at the end of 2 weeks that we were still stuck in the 1st line, specifically the word Thaazhthiraavaai. Somehow to my ears, the notes never felt right. My ears seemed to perceive it as the oddest notes ever, and invariably I ended up saying *CUT* and each practise session was more of a bottomless pit akin to an Akshaya Pathiram

So when Murali suggested this song, I was so overcome by nostalgia that I gladly agreed. One thing that worried Murali immensly (as I was led to believe later ofcourse) was whether our roles would be reversed, and if I would don the taskmaster's role? Would he have to sing Thaazzhhh..thiiiraa...vaaaaiiiiii again and again and again?

Pssttt.. It was only 2 months ago that I found out how much my juniors 'liked' me!(?) Every weekday/weekend for a month to learn just one line?? What a way to remember??? *LOL*

This song was featured on Ravindar-- the then famous dancing star (apart from Kamal in those days ofcourse!!).
